This 2-year project developed a regional coastal resilience plan for a ten-municipality region in southern Maine through collaborative engagement of municipalities, local land trusts, regional conservation organizations, and state and federal natural resource agencies.

SMPDC’s Regional Sustainability and Resilience Program has partnered with the Wells Reserve and the York County Soil and Water Conservation District on a new grant-funded project to advance nature-based solutions (NBS) for protecting southern Maine’s people, property, and the environment from coastal climate hazards.

Supported by grant funds arising from the powerful storm of March 2018 through the Economic Development Administration (EDA), SMPDC developed a regional economic resilience plan that identifies vulnerabilities to coastal storm impacts and present short- and long-term strategies for enhancing economic resilience in the face of storms and future sea level rise.

April 2022
This project developed a guidance document and fact sheet to support municipal staff and planning boards in integrating resilience measures into land use regulations. The document provides a menu of land use provisions and resilience measures that municipalities can incorporate into existing ordinances or combine for a standalone coastal resilience ordinance.
July 2022
Funded by a Coastal Communities Grant from the Maine Coastal Program, SMPDC partnered with Cumberland County Soil and Water Conservation District and Integrated Environmental Engineering, Inc. to develop a model ordinance for low impact development (LID) to assist communities protect water quality, integrate climate resilience into stormwater management, and comply with the new 2022 MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems) permit.
February 2022
This project developed a regional checklist and standards document for Sediment and Erosion Control Plans for development sites to comply with requirements of the new 2022 MS4 permit and inform municipal ordinance revisions to ensure sound stormwater management, minimize soil pollution, and protect the region’s water quality.

This project assessed municipal-level economic and social impacts of sea level rise and storm surge hazards and developed locally-relevant adaptation and resiliency planning strategies that address local and regional vulnerabilities.
